Acanthostachys strobilacea There are only two species in this genus. This one has a cascading habit with some leaves reaching 90cm, making it an excellent subject for hanging baskets. The long-lasting inflorescence resembles a tiny pineapple with stiff orange-red bracts and bright yellow flowers. Very attractive & hardy. $12.00 - $20.00
Acanthostachys pitcairnioides This is a newer species than the above. It forms clumps easily and is about 35cm tall. In full sun the leaves turn dark red with a lacquered shine. The prominent black teeth and small brilliant blue flowers at the base of the leaves make a striking and beautiful contrast. Full sun. $12.00 - $15.00
THE AMAZING AECHMEAS: A large genus comprising several hundred species and one of the easiest to grow. They have two most important requirements: very good drainage and water in their vases(centres) at all times. They have beautiful foliage and striking inflorescences that last for some months and in some cases the flowers develop into colourful berries. Some like full sun and only colour fully when they have it while others with softer leaves need shade. Aechmeas adapt well to pot culture, indoors or outdoors, under shade cloth or in dappled light beneath trees. There is an Aechmea for every occasion.
Aechmea 'Anton' Similar growth habit to Aechmea orlandiana but larger and more open, with more leaves which are light green, slightly barred with black. The upright flower head has blue flowers. Bright shade or morning sun. $15.00 - $20.00

Aechmea 'Aztec Gold'

A cultivar of Aechmea recurvata var. recurvata in marginated form, yellow, gold and green. A phenomenon of this plant is that the pups appear as plain yellow but as they develop a green stripe appears which uniformly improves and the plant turns into a vigorous grower for a variegate. The flower head has mauve-pink flowers. $12.00 - $15.00
Aechmea 'Bert' A tall urn-shaped plant of matt-green leaves with dark brown markings. The inflorescence rises above the leaves with red bracts and orange flowers. Bright shade or morning sun. $15.00 - $20.00
Aechmea 'Bert' variegata A nicely variegated form of this popular hybrid, mottled with light brown and with a bold white stripe up the centre of each leaf. Very nice but not common. $25.00 - $40.00
Aechmea 'Big Ben' Recurvata var. benrathii X orlandiana. A fairly small recurvata type plant which multiplies very well. Upper leaves turn a brilliant red at flowering time. The flower head emerges just above the leaves and the petals are lilac coloured. Very hardy. Stands frost, dryness and full sun. $10.00 - $12.00
Aechmea 'Big Stuff' Hummel Hybrid. This is a beautiful medium to large, robust plant with shiny olive green leaves and bright red undersides. The flower stalk is about 45cm high with a panicle of purplish-blue flowers followed by red berries which are very long-lasting. Bright light indoors. Aechmea 'Black Jack' The leaves are almost black and extremely glossy when grown in good light. Excellent indoors. It has a pendant spike of coral petals tipped with blue followed by orange-red berries. Most unusual colouring. Shade. $15.00 - $20.00
Aechmea bromeliifolia Interesting pear-shaped form with grey-green leaves. The flower stalk has rose-coloured bracts and a pine cone-like spike of white or pale yellow flowers that soon turn black. The plant varies greatly. Shade to morning sun. great for landscaping among rocks. $12.00 - $15.00
Aechmea 'Burgundy' A large graceful rosette with dark, waxy, burgundy coloured leaves which glow with colour when grown in good light. The inflorescence is a very attractive purple and white. Bright light indoors or bright shade outdoors. Can handle morning sun. VERY HARDY. $15.00 - $20.00
Aechmea coelestis var. albomarginata Medium-sized upright plant of silvery-green leaves and creamy white border. Compact pyramidal flower head has light lavender-blue petals and small rose braccts followed by magenta berries making a display plant even when not in flower. Aechmea correia-araujoi This unusual and handsome species is striking with an upright vase-shape and stoloniferous habit. The foliage is a light, translucent green, banded above and below with dark brown. It resembles orlandiana in colour but the back-ground foliage colour is paler. The inflorescence is rather like Aechmea bambusoides with clusters of short branches and large red bracts on a long thin scape. $20.00 - $30.00
Aechmea dealbata A relatively rare plant with a vase-like form. Leaves undersides are green while the red-lilac upper sides have white cross-banding. The flower head is similar to A. fasciata; pyramidal with pink bracts dusted with silver while the violet flowers turn red when finished. Bright shade. $15.00 - $25.00
Aechmea fasciata From Southern Brazil. The popularity of this bromeliad is not only due to its beautifully proportioned vase-like form with attractive green leaves, barred with silver cross-bands and its striking pyramidal inflorescence dotted with lavender-blue flowers but also to the fact that it remains in bloom and colourful for many months. Aechmea mexicana Large handsome plant. Its broad light green leaves mottled with darker green turn bright rose in full sun. The stout erect flower stalk bears a panicle of tiny rose-coloured flowers covered with a white fuzz which turns to beautiful pearl-white berries in a dense cluster lasting for many months. Aechmea 'nudicaulis var. cuspidata Brazil. Very showy and quite hardy. The rigid tubular leaves are dark brown shading to green with an almost black cusp at the ends of the leaves. Aechmea nudicaulis 'seidelii' A very handsome form and quite robust with compact growth when grown in bright light and stressed a little. Leaves are reddish, stiff and banded with silver. $20.00 - $30.00
Aechmea nudicaulis 'Silver Streak'  Rigid upright chocolate leaves, heavily frosted with silver bands. The flower head has very bright yellow flowers and brilliant red scape bracts. $20.00
Aechmea nudicaulis var. 'Xavante' One of the most beautiful cultivars with red-bordered leaves sometimes red all over. Quite stoloniferous with the usual flower spike of yellow with red bracts. $25.00
Aechmea nudicaulis var. aequalis This variety differs from other strains in having the scape bracts almost all equal in length up the stem but not all together below the stem. Colour is the same as with other nudicaulis. The plant will grow in pure sand and full sun. $15.00 - $20.00

A tightly tubular form of this species with handsome variegated, stiff leaves which flare out at the tips. Quite rare. $20.00 - $30.00

Aechmea orlandiana Brazil. A striking, medium sized plant. Pale green leaves marked with zig zag bands ranging from maroon to black. The leaves become blotched maroon to nearly black in bright light and full sun. The compact panicle of the inflorescence is borne on an arching spike. Bracts are salmon-scarlet with pale yellow flowers. Bright shade or morning sun. $12.00 - $15.00

Aechmea serrata

A large handsome bromeliad with bright green leaves 60cm long with dark reddish-brown teeth that edge the leaves. Flower spike about 60cm high bears pink and green bracts edged with white hairs and dark purple petals. the flowering period lasts for over three months. Morning sun. $15.00 - $25.00

Aechmea 'Shining Light' A large rosette of very shiny discolor leaves. Very bright red on the reverse. Branshced flower head with red flowers then white berries. Very showy. $25.00 - $35.00

Aechmea 'Tam Star'

Aechmea 'Toni' A medium to large upright plant with relatively stiff green leaves. Flowers are a very attractive purple and white rising about 50cm above the leaves. Ideal landscape plant. $15.00 - $20.00
Aechmea warasii A medium sized funnel form rosette. Soft, very shiny reddish-brown leaves. A dark burgundy pendant flower stem of dark purplr flowers with white margins turning red and followed by red berries. Bright shade. $10.00 - $15.00

Alcantarea geniculata A medium-large species with green foliage in a 1m rosette. The striking inflorescence is about 1m tall with deep pink bracts and many creamy branches with bright yellow flowers. $25.00 - $40.00
Alcantarea imperialis rubra Truly one of the most regal and imposing members of the bromeliad family. A terrestrial, this giant species is adaptable only for outdoor growing. It can have a spread of over 1.5m and reach 2.5m high. The branched inforescence has glossy, deep red bracts from which emerge white or yellow flowers. Makes a great landscape specimen. Full sun. $25.00 - $40.00
Alcantarea odorata A medium-sized beauty, about 1m wide in a dense, upright rosette. The foliage is green with silver crossbands that later become obscured by a layer of silver-white powder. The beautiful inflorescence is a tall scape with many red branches and freagrant flowers. $30.00 - $50.00
Alcantarea imperialis green The same species as 'rubra' but lacks any red pigment. It grows as large but has a slightly different shape, being more open with leaves usually stiffer. An excellent landscape plant of impressive proportions in shade or sun. $25.00 - $40.00
Alcantarea regina A large terrestrial species with an inflorescence that can attain a height of 2 - 3m. The leaves are light green and waxy with the tips sharply recurved. The tall branched inflorescence has rosy red bracts. Flowers have white or yellow reflexed petals that emit a delightful jasmine-like fragrance. Bright shade. $20.00 - $40.00
Alcantarea vinicolor A large plant, resembling a smaller version of A. imperialis with very deep wine-red leaves. Marvellous for landscaping in frost-free areas and very beautiful when well-grown. $30.00 - $45.00
ANANAS The pineapple family.
Ananas bracteatus The red pineapple. Has stiff, reddish, serrated leaves forming a dense rosette with a cone-shaped inflorescence crowned with a tuft of leaf-like bracts. Petals either mauve or red. A lover of extremely bright light. The fruit is scarlet until maturity when it turns yellow and edible. Very sweet and juicy when fully ripe. $20.00 - $30.00
BEAUTIFUL BILLBERGIAS The Billbergias are mostly tubular in form, varying from 15 to 90cm tall. They adapt to most household conditions readily. Their foliage and flowers are of every conceivable colour and quite spectacular, though only lasting a short while. This genus doesn't require much attention, seems to thrive on neglect. When grown in clumps some species will flower two or even three times a year and most will take morning sun.
Billbergia amoena var. amoena A tall, rosy red-flushed tube, spotted with cream. An upright flower stem with large red bracts and bright green calyx, tipped with purple and the green petals are also tipped purple. HARDY. Morning sun. $12.00 - $20.00
Billbergia amoena x horrida A tall blackish red tube, heavily spotted cream. Some silver banding $12.00 - $15.00
Billbergia 'Aussie Rose' A funnel-shaped rosette of light green leaves motled with white. About 45cm high when in flower.The flower stem is red with red bracts and green flowers with dark blue tips. $10.00 - $15.00
Billbergia 'Catherine Wilson' Tall curving leaves mottled with white and turning bright pink in strong light. The flower stm is red and the bracts, tube and petals wholly green. $10.00 - $15.00
Billbergia chlorosticta hybrid A tall plant with dark pink leaves mottled and barred with silver. A huge red-stemmed flower head having red flower bracts, pink calyx and a green tube with dark blue petals. $12.00 - $15.00

Billbergia 'Karamea Vesuvius' The whole plant is a lovely clear cardinal-red when grown in good light, hence the name. A reasonably large billbergia. The flowers are green. Bright shade or morning sun. $12.00 - $20.00

Ochagavia littoralis Previously Ochagavia carnea. An attractive rosette of stiff, well-armed green leaves with a silvery-white reverse. ORTHOPHYTUM These clustering plants are easily grown as long as they have a warm bright atmosphere. They can withstand prolonged dryness as they are thick-leaved and retain some water in their leaves.

PITCAIRNIA These are referred to as the 'grass-like bromeliads'. Some are deciduous while others retain their leaves all year. In most species the flowers appear on a long stalk and range in colour through white, yellow, orange and reds. They grow best in moist, shaded positions in the ground.
Pitcairnia brittoniana Green leaves with red margins to about 10cm from the base. The simple unbranched inflorescence rises above the leaves to about 1.5m in height, densely flowered, the sepals are dark red and the tubular flowers are yeloow to bright orange. $12.00 - $15.00
Pitcairnia flammea A smallish plant with abundant green leaves 50-90cm long and 3-6cm wide. The inflorescence bears a red-flowered spike 15-20cm long. Grows in groups so makes quite a show with many heads of flowers. $12.00 - 15.00
Pitcairnia flammea var. floccosa Similar to above but leaves narrower and with flocking, especially on the reverse side of the leaves. Flowers similar to falmmea. $10.00 - $15.00
Pitcairnia heterophylla South Mexico, West Indies, Venezuela. Arching grass-like leaves coming from a spiny bulbous base. Deciduous. The short floral scape appers in early Spring with flowers of showy pink to red petals and green bracts clustered in a head-like inflorescence. The base of the leaves are furnished with very sharp and dangerous spines, so need to be handled carefully. Good in hanging baskets. $12.00 - $15.00

PUYA All Puyas are rugged spiny plants withstanding all kinds of conditions as long as the drainage is good. They are excellent subjects for landscaping. Most of the inflkorescences are extremly showy with vivid colours.
Puya humilis Previously butcherianum. This Puya is relatively small and grows well in a 20cm pot. THe leaves are grey-green and the flower stem is erect with violet to black flowers. $12.00 - $15.00
 Puya miribilis  A loose rosette of leaves about 50-75cm long and very narrow. The 90cm high green scape has simple racemed petals, greenish to white, spreading at the tips. A very fine, small, free-flowering plant. Prefers some shade. $10.00 - $15.00
 QUESNELIA Living Vases. Gorgeous inflorescences with rosy-pink bracts like crepe paper appear on nearly all Quesnelias. They are quite hardy and adapt well to most household conditions, but need water in the vases/cups at all times.
 Quesnelia arvensis Sao Paulo. A well-formed rosette with stiff leaves. A 30cm high flower stalk bears a gorgeous flower head which is a dense oval shape consisting of rosy-red bracts and violet and white petals. The amazing flower head looks like rosy-red vrepe paper. FASCINATING TILLANDSIAS Tillandsias take many unusual shapes and forms and are quite intriguing. They are highly variable, often bulbous, tufted, grass-like or having some other curious form. We have other Tillandsias for sale from time to time.
Tillandsia cyanea  A graceful rosette of mainly thin grass-like leaves with vertical brown stripes. The inflorescence is a bright rose-coloured fan-like head about 10-15cm long and about 5cm wide.  Tillandsia multicaulis Found in dark, humid forests. An unusual species that can have as many as eight flower spikes at once which form between the leaves and are about 30cm long and 6cm wide. Reddish-gold bracts with flowers that hjave blue petals. The rosette itself is attractive with pale green soft leaves and can easily be mistaken for a Vriesea.  Tillandsia punctulata  Thrity to forty narrow blueish-green leaves, black at the base. The 30cm flower spike is covered with shiny scarlet bracts and topped by one to three cone-shaped spikes. The unusual tubular flowers have blackish-purple petals tipped with white. $12.00 - $15.00
Tillandsia secunda A large silver Tillandsia forming a rosette which at maturity is about 30-60cm in diameter. THe leaves have a frosted appearance with amaranth margins. The flowers are violet and it has numerous offsets along its stem after blooming. Van br grown on rocks or wood or in a pot.This plant grows best in bright light and high humidity. Tillandsia tricolor A dense rosette of recurving narrow leaves. The slender erest scape is red and the flower head is a single spike. THe flower bracts turn yellow with age and the tubular flowers have bright violet petals. $12.00 - $15.00
Tillandsia viridiflora Forms a medium to large rosette of very thin green leaves tht are purple underneath. The tall erect inflorescence has large green flowers with very long stamens hanging liek tassles. When grown in very bright light all the foliage becomes purple. $12.00 - $15.00
VRIESEA The most eloquent praise could not do justice to the Vreisea. Known as the flowering swords of the jungle, they have adapted well to cultivation and can be handled in comfort as they have no spines. Some Vrieseas have self-shining leaves in graceful rosette forms and many sport brilliant red spikes with yellow flowers. Others have spotting, bars, speckles or blotches on the foliage. Colour just runs riot in the leaf patterns. Vrieseas flourish well in dappled light, warm humid conditions with good air movement. They grow well indoors but keep water in their central cups at all times. They also like excellent drainage as with all epiphytes.
Vriesea 'Angela'  A beautiful dark red platynema hybrid. Medium to large rosette. Similar markings to Vriesea 'Intermedia Rubra' but much darker colouring. $25.00

 Vriesea carinata (dwarf)  South Brazil. This dainty little Vriesea is one of the most charming of the genus, with light green leaves. It has a flattened spike 5-8cm long.
